Common Questions
4-POST LIFT FAQ
What ceiling height do I need for a 4-post lift?
For most standard 9,000 lb lifts with ~82" rise, you need a minimum of 11–12 feet of ceiling clearance.
Add the vehicle height to the lift rise, plus 2–3 inches of clearance from the ceiling.
A lifted SUV at 72" + 82" rise = 154" (12.8 feet minimum).
Low-ceiling models like the BendPak HD-9ST offer 70" rise and work in 10-foot ceilings.
Always check the specific model's rise height and calculate for your tallest vehicle.
What concrete thickness is required?
Most 4-post lifts require a minimum of 4 inches of reinforced concrete, with 4,000+ PSI compressive strength.
BendPak recommends 4.25" minimum with rebar for their HD-9.
If you're unsure of your concrete depth, drill a small test hole in an inconspicuous corner before purchasing.
Many garages built to code have 4" slabs, but older homes can vary.
Commercial-grade lifts (14,000 lb+) typically require 6" concrete.
Does a 4-post lift need to be anchored to the floor?
Yes — while 4-post lifts are freestanding (no floor anchors required to stand), they should always be anchored for safety during use.
All BendPak and Atlas lifts come with concrete anchoring hardware.
The anchor process takes about 30 minutes and ensures the lift cannot shift or tip during operation.
This is required for any ALI certification compliance.
What electrical circuit do I need?
Most home-garage 4-post lifts (8,000–9,000 lb) run on a standard 110V/115V circuit with a dedicated 15–20 amp breaker.
You do NOT need 220V for most home models — this is a common misconception.
The BendPak HD-9 and Atlas GP-9000 both run on standard 110V.
Commercial models over 14,000 lb typically require 220V.
Always verify the specific model's electrical requirements before installation.
What is ALI certification and do I need it?
ALI (Automotive Lift Institute) certification means the lift has been independently tested and verified to meet ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standards — the most rigorous lift safety standard in North America.
For home use, ALI certification is technically optional but strongly recommended.
For any commercial application (professional shop, dealership), ALI certification is required by OSHA.
BendPak and Atlas both offer ALI-certified models.
The BendPak HD-9 is ALI certified; the Atlas GP-9000 is also ALI certified.
How long does installation take?
A standard 4-post lift takes 3–5 hours for professional installation, or 4–8 hours for a capable DIY installer with a helper.
The process includes: uncrating the freight delivery, positioning the posts, connecting the runways, installing the hydraulic lines, anchoring to concrete, connecting power, and testing.
BendPak includes detailed installation instructions and a set-up DVD with every lift.
We also offer paid professional installation scheduling in most metro areas.
